Researchers Remotely Disable Popcorn Time Updater, Preventing Botnet Formation
Dutch security firm Eye Security remotely pushed over 2 million updates to computers running Time4Popcorn, an abandoned fork of the Popcorn Time streaming app. This action disabled a vulnerable background updater that could have allowed attackers to execute code with elevated privileges on millions of devices. The proactive intervention prevented the formation of a large botnet, highlighting the risks associated with unmaintained software and the potential for ethical hacking to mitigate widespread threats.
